EMPOWERMENT

SAW provides experiences and resources to its beneficiaries so that they can be empowered to live free of violence and find opportunities for success.

From 2006-2018, the Gender Based Violence (GBV) project supported women and children who experience gender and sexual based violence. The GBV project consisted of two interrelated approaches: Response to, and rehabilitation of, survivors; and Prevention through awareness. This project was officially discontinued at the end of 2019 due to inadequate funding and staffing.

We help our shelter residents become independent and gain the job-readiness skills they need to succeed via our Income Generation and Kitchen Garden Programs. These programs are integrated into our school's curriculum and any of our shelter residents can participate. Funds raised by these programs contribute to 20% of our total budget!

EMPOWERING OUR SHELTER RESIDENTS

DSC_0151.JPG

Our Income Generation Program empowers shelter residents to be self-sufficient by giving them job-readiness skills and payment for their work. We give women jobs creating garments such as school bags and uniforms, Karen clothing, scarves, etc, which are sold in local and international communities.

We maintain two farms on our land and integrate the cultivation of crops into our school curriculum. Both SAW school students and shelter residents participate in the growing of crops such as squash, eggplants, mushrooms, morning glory, and rice. The harvested food is then used at our shelters to feed the children and residents.
